In the Fall of 2007, we celebrated the Foreign Language Residence Program’s (FLRP) 35th anniversary. As Northern Illinois University’s oldest residential program, we are proud of our long history of providing NIU students with an extraordinary opportunity to practice their language skills outside the classroom setting in a relaxed residential environment.

Native speakers of Chinese, French, German, Japanese and Spanish live with our students in International House and serve as cultural ambassadors for their respective countries. During the evening meal, Monday through Thursday from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m., participants gather at individual language tables to socialize in the target language with fellow participants, department faculty members, and often other international guests.

Participants receive one elective credit for participating in the program and can receive up to four elective credits over a two-year period. In order to receive the elective credit, students must live on the floor, participate in all of the activities, and be enrolled in a section of FLAL 410.

Students have the opportunity to participate in two intensive language weekends at NIU’s Lorado Taft Field Campus in Oregon, Illinois, all expenses paid, and have unlimited access to the FLRP private library. Special dinners and Language Night presentations help round out a unique experience for students with a passion for learning other languages and about other cultures.
