My name is Kran. I was named after a festival in Thailand, called Songkran; I was born on that day. The Songkran Festival is the Traditional Thai New Year’s day, which happens mid-summer when temperatures hit 90 degrees or more. It’s the time when families and friends gather to cerebrate and throw water at each other. It’s a good feeling to see everybody smile and celebrate on my birthday. At that time of the year, I am always with my family in a small town up in the northern part of Thailand. We prepare some food to go to the temple. We decorate our home with several summer blossoms and coconut branches (sometimes Banana trees).  I remember a feeling of hot humid days overwhelmed with the voices of children laughing everywhere, throwing water on each other like crazy. It’s a lot of fun.

I have two little nieces, one is named Nam Khao (meaning Rice Broth) another is named Nam Khing (meaning Ginger Broth).  Nam Khao is the elder, who loves her brother dearly, but tries to hide every toy away from him. Nam Khing is a quiet little boy, except when he cries. He’s a great climber. I will have no doubt he will end up being a mountain climber some day.
I miss them...
